The best skincare for women over 50

As we move through menopause the skin changes — collagen slows, moisture dips. Here’s how I’d rethink your routine after 50.

The best skincare for women over 50

Skin in your fifties is not the skin you had in your thirties, and that’s completely normal. As we move through menopause the body makes less collagen, so the skin loses some of its bounce and can start to look a little softer or more lined. The good news is that a routine you tailor to where your skin is now — rather than where it used to be — can make a real difference. Here’s how I’d think about it.

Cleanse gently, exfoliate kindly

Good skincare at any age starts with washing your face properly. For more mature skin I’d steer you towards a mild, non-stripping cleanser — ideally one with a gentle acid that lifts away dead cells and leaves the skin brighter, rather than a harsh physical scrub. Scrubs can damage the skin barrier, and a compromised barrier tends to create more problems than it solves.

Support moisture and volume

Hyaluronic acid is one of the skin’s own moisture magnets, and our levels start dropping from our thirties as collagen production slows. That’s when fine lines and deeper creases tend to become more noticeable. A topical hyaluronic serum is a sensible daily step, though the molecules in most off-the-shelf products are quite large and sit mostly on the surface. In clinic, treatments that deliver hydrating ingredients into the skin can be a more targeted way to support moisture — and we’d always talk through whether that’s right for you first.

Work with your skin’s texture

Treatments such as microneedling create tiny, controlled traumas that prompt the skin to renew itself and build its own collagen over time. The effect is gradual rather than instant — you’re encouraging the skin to behave a little younger from within. Regular professional peels can sit alongside this nicely to keep the surface smooth and even.

Tackle pigmentation and redness

Many of us spent years in the sun without daily SPF, and as the skin thins with age that history can surface as brown patches or uneven tone. Targeted in-clinic treatments can help soften the appearance of pigmentation. Menopause can also bring on flushing and persistent redness, which is sometimes an early sign of rosacea — if that sounds like you, it’s worth a proper look so we can choose the right, calming approach rather than guessing.

Protect, every single day

If you take one thing from this, let it be SPF. Daily sun protection — not just in summer — is the simplest way to slow further pigmentation and keep the skin looking healthier for longer. Even overcast days let plenty of ageing rays through. Results from any skincare or treatment build gradually, and individual results vary, so consistency genuinely matters more than any single miracle product.

If your skin has changed with menopause and you’re not sure where to start, the easiest first step is a consultation. We’ll look at your skin honestly, talk through what’s realistic, and build a plan that fits you.
